Our Concern Debating team are busy this term tackling development education issues such as – the threat of disinformation, boycotting fast fashion and discovering are global commitments to end world hunger only hot air?
They started out against Calsanctius College, Oranmore, Co Galway opposing the motion that “Disinformation is the biggest threat to peace in 2025”. It was a close fought debate with the more experienced Calasanctius team taking a majority win over our brand new TY debaters from Kilbeggan. That team was captained by Bella Fornaciai and included Eve Bennett, Eoin Brennan and Darragh Hill.
Next up they took on Coláiste Chiaráin from Athlone which has an interesting link with Mercy Kilbeggan as their principal Mr Brendan Waldron taught Woodwork and DCG / Technical Graphics in our school for a number of years. Mercy Kilbeggan’s team of Aisling O’Connor, Amy Birch, Emily O’Brien and Aoife Mooney overcame Coláiste Chiaráin’s team and won a majority victory.
The team are preparing for their next battle against Mercy College, Roscommon town at present. They will oppose the motion that “Global Commitments to End World Hunger are a Load of Hot Air”. Darragh Hill will captain the team this time, accompanied by Amy Birch, Eoin Brennan and Aoife Mooney. Best of luck debaters!
