Our gallant team of Darragh Hill, Aisling O’Connor, Emily O’Brien and Aoife Mooney made it through to the knockout round of the Concern Debating competition.
Proposing the motion that “Gen Z has the Power to end Global Poverty” they took on a strong team from Gallen Community School, Ferbane, Co Offaly. The debate took place on Zoom and was chaired by Eoin Brennan, TY, and the time keeper was TY’s Bella Fornaciai.
It was a spirited debate where teams argued passionately about the possibility of the most empathetic, connected and educated generation ever, mobilising to tackle one of the oldest problems in human kind’s history: poverty; while also emphasising that clicking or swiping on a device is not enough to end the scourge of global poverty. The problems are deep routed and systemic and Gen Z alone cannot combat them, despite their well meaning gestures. Ultimately, the motion was defeated and Gallen Community School march on to the last 32. We wish them well. Commiserations to our own debaters and well done on your first year on the podium! We have not heard the last from these eloquent speakers.
